Volunteer Chinaza Olisakwe traveled from Anambra to Enugu. After a warm reception from the headmaster, who expressed gratitude for AbleBooks' work and called Chinaza a role model to the students, she proceeded to the classroom and began the literacy session immediately. A woman visiting the school that day was so fascinated by the chessboard and the session that she stopped to pray for the team and promised further support.
The most telling moment came at the end. When Chinaza tried to collect the books for safekeeping, the students surrounded her and pleaded to keep them. They were not ready to let go. She reassured them the books would be accessible in the school library whenever they wanted to read, and officially handed them over to the headmaster with a request that students be allowed to access them freely. The headmaster agreed, expressed his appreciation, and prayed for her before she left.
That moment of students clinging to their books says everything about what deaf children in Nigeria are hungry for. Not charity. Not pity. Just stories, access, and the simple dignity of being able to read something made for them.
