AbleBooks volunteers Erinosho Qoozim, Sanusi Aminat, and Fabowale Gbemisola conducted their first outreach of the year at Kwara State School for Special Needs in Ilorin, delivering a literacy and chess session for students with disabilities. After weeks of preparation, the team reported a successful visit with strong student engagement throughout.
Literacy is not a privilege. For children with disabilities in Nigeria, access to books and learning materials that reflect their experiences remains one of the most significant gaps in the education system. When schools receive not just books but active, hands-on engagement sessions, it signals to students that their learning matters and that people are willing to show up for them consistently.
Chess adds another dimension to that message. It builds critical thinking, patience, and confidence in a way that transcends language and ability. Paired with inclusive storytelling, it creates an environment where every student in the room has something to contribute, something to win, and something to take away long after the session ends.
