Reading Session at Special Education Centre, Mutum Biyu Taraba State

The AbleBooks Taraba State team visited Special Education Centre, Mutum Biyu for a book engagement session with deaf students.

The session opened with a student-led prayer before the team introduced themselves and gave a brief history of AbleBooks Initiative. Volunteer Balkisu engaged the junior students with "Being Different is Fun," while the senior students received a character-by-character walkthrough of the book on the blackboard.

To wrap up the reading session, students were asked questions based on what they had just learned, including character names, ages, and traits. Those who answered correctly received biscuits as a reward. Most students participated enthusiastically and answered correctly.

The team also introduced the students to chess before heading outside for photographs with school staff. Books and chess sets were donated to the Head of Department, who was asked to make them available to students whenever needed. The HOD expressed gratitude for the visit and agreed to communicate a date for a follow-up book club session in September.

One memorable moment: one student loved his copy of the storybook so much he quietly slipped away with it after collecting his biscuit. He was never found.
