AbleBooks volunteers Hamza Yahaya and Abdulmalik Sani visited School for Special Education in Gusau, Zamfara State, delivering books and facilitating a reading and chess session with deaf students. The school principal welcomed the initiative enthusiastically, affirming his commitment to integrating the books into the school's learning activities and encouraging the team to make the visits a regular occurrence.
The session drew strong engagement from students across different age groups. The combination of interactive reading and chess created an environment where students could participate actively, ask questions, and connect with the materials on their own terms. An AGILE program monitoring committee visiting the school that day also observed the session, adding an element of external visibility to AbleBooks' grassroots work.
At the close of the session, when volunteers moved to return the books for safekeeping, students requested that the books be made available for borrowing. A borrowing list was created on the spot. It was a small but telling detail: given access to the right materials, deaf students do not need to be convinced to read. They simply need the opportunity.
